Editing Concepts

By Mr. K. G. Suresh

We had a lecture of Mr. K.G. Suresh in which he taught us set-up of News agency and Newspapers. He started delivering the lecture in set-up of news agencies and Newspapers. Every news agency, he said, has a board of directors, consisting of independent members mostly editors of different newspapers. He taught that unlike newspapers, News agency doesn’t have their editorial policy. And News agency’s  set-up is also not much different from that of the newspaper. At the top of the news agency’s set-up is ‘editor-in-chief’, then ‘executive editor’ heading ‘National Bureau’ & ‘Regional Bureaus’. ‘National bureau’ consists of ‘Feature & magazines section’, ‘legal editor’, ‘chief of bureau’, ‘sports editors’, ‘political editor’, and ‘Financial editor’. ‘Regional Bureaus’ are sub-divided into ‘Delhi Bureau’, Kolkata, Chennai & Mumbai bureaus.

More than 50 % of India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) comes from services.  Service sector provides employment. It requires lower investment and capital. It is also a source for high foreign earnings. It has led to an improvement in the standard of living.

According to Sean Harkins, “In the 17r century Indian and China accounted for 60-70% of the world’s earnings.” Today India accounts for around 5 % of the same.

Historically, India has been an agricultural economy. China was able to move from agricultural sector to manufacturing and that worked for their economy. However, India realized that it could not manage the manufacturing sector efficiently and focused on the service sector.
India could be the global service super power. India provides cheap and cost effective professionals to the world. By 2030, India will provide 50 % of the total services in the world. The average age of Indians would be 29 by 2020. This average and the Indian English language skills along with our demographics will be favorable for India in the global service sector industry.

Langugae and Communication

Language requires a medium. Medium is that which converts messages into signals so that they can be transmitted through a channel eg. When we speak in a room, the air acts as a medium.
In Radio transmission, electromagnetic signals are transmitted through radio waves.

Language is the primary medium. All media is an extension of language. Language is primarily oral and has words, sentences and discourses.
Speech

It is the beginning of language. It is a social act, which represents an emotive aspect of our existence.

There are three types of media:
1) Presentational Media
2) Representational Media
3) Mechanical Media

Speech is a part of Presentational Media because speech cannot be generated without people for whom it is generated. A speaker and listener should be available and both should be present at the same time. Speech is irreversible. Words cannot be reiterated. In order to erase the meaning of something more words need to be added in order to clarify.

Writing For Newspapers

by Ms Satrupa Chaudhry

After giving us a lucid explanation of different types of Features and their examples, madam thought of engaging students with a written assignment of what we learnt. She categorically told us that we needed to write about varied Features in order to have a first-hand experience of its dynamics. We learnt how Reporting and Feature-writing is distinctly different from each other.Reporting is purely documenting an event to inform people objectively and concisely. On the other hand,Features are descriptive and usually accomodate personal opinions. We have the liberty to go at length so as to substantiate our line of argument.

In the written exercise,we were given 45 minutes to write a News Feature which is an article about an important issue that is attracting media's attention. We chose molestation of a girl by self-styled godman Asaram Bapu as our topic. We utilized the valuable inputs given by madam in our effort to begin with an outstanding Introduction. She informed us about how an ironical beginning(presentig paradox) can be a key tool to catch the fascination of the reader. We were enlightened by her insights about the need to exercise self-restraint when it comes to an issue as sensitive as sexual asault. We didn't go over the top in our scathing criticism on Asaram Bapu-a reminder given by mam.She even taught us how we can be argumentative through sound reasoning in our persuit of writing with a difference. The conclusion is  the bedrock of any Feature and we were rightly advised to conclude in a manner that can galvanize reader into action or even have a lasting impact on the reader's mind.
